Agreement on Georgian wine protection enters into force in the EU
The agreement on the protection of geographical indications of food, wine and Georgian agricultural production entered into force in the EU since 1 April 2012.
According to Georgian Statistic Committee the document is aimed at the protection of geographical indications of Georgian products in European Union member countries.
Under this agreement, 18 names of regions will be under protection regulations. In these regions such Georgian wines as Kotehi, Kardenahi, Hvanchkara, Svyri, Tsinandali, Kakheti, Kindzmarauli, Mukuzani, Vazisubani, Gurjani, Teliani, Napareuli, Athens, Manavi, Tibaani, Ahasheni, Tvishy, Kvareli are produced.
In turn, agreement on the protection of more than three thousand names of spirits, wine and food produced in EU countries shall enter into force in the territory of Georgia
Signing a bilateral agreement provides opportunities for increasing the number of brands of Georgian production. For Georgia it is important as it continues the registration of geographical indications, and soon a new list of names and brands of wine will be transferred to the European Union for consideration.
